What the Missing Royalty Calculator does

When a song plays on a streaming service in the United States, a mechanical royalty is owed to the songwriters and publishers of the composition. The Mechanical Licensing Collective (the MLC) collects those royalties from digital services and pays them to the owners it can match. If a song isn't registered, or its ownership shares don't add up, the MLC can't match it, and the money sits unmatched until someone claims it.

This calculator is a quick way to see whether that might be happening to your music. You search your artist name, and it compares your released recordings with the MLC's public registration data. Songs that look unregistered or only partly claimed are flagged, and where stream counts are available it gives a rough dollar estimate for each one.

How the check works

  1. Find your catalog. We pull your recordings and their ISRC codes from Spotify, most popular songs first.
  2. Check the MLC. Each ISRC is looked up in the MLC's public data to see whether the recording is linked to a registered work and how much of that work's ownership is claimed.
  3. Look up streams. For songs with a possible gap, we fetch lifetime stream counts.
  4. Estimate the gap. Streams × a modeled $0.00115 per stream × the unregistered share gives the estimate for each song, and the songs are added up.

What the result can and can't tell you

The result is an estimate built from public data, not a balance the MLC owes you. It doesn't verify who owns a song, which territories apply, or what you've already been paid, and it doesn't cover performance royalties from ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC or digital performance royalties from SoundExchange. A low or zero result doesn't mean every royalty source is in order. A high result means some songs are worth checking against your MLC account and your agreements.

If the check flags songs, the next step is to create a free RoyaltyCoPilot account, confirm your catalog, and connect your royalty accounts so you can see what is actually registered and paid.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Missing Royalty Calculator free?

Yes. The artist check is free and needs no credit card. You only need a free account if you want to review your full catalog and connect your royalty sources afterward.

Where does the data come from?

Your recordings and their ISRCs come from Spotify's catalog. Registration and ownership shares come from the MLC's public data. Lifetime stream counts are only looked up for songs where the check found a possible gap.

How is the dollar estimate calculated?

For each song with a possible gap, the check multiplies lifetime streams by a modeled rate of $0.00115 per stream and by the share of the song that appears unregistered. That rate is a modeling assumption, not a statutory rate or a statement balance.

Does the estimate mean the MLC is holding money for me?

No. It points to songs worth a closer look. It does not confirm ownership, eligible territories, reporting periods, or royalties you may already have been paid. Your MLC account and your agreements are what confirm it.

Does it check SoundExchange, ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC?

No. The free check covers MLC mechanical registrations only. Performance royalties from PROs and digital performance royalties from SoundExchange are separate, and you can review those inside a RoyaltyCoPilot account.

Why does it say some songs could not be verified?

Sometimes the MLC or a streaming data source does not answer in time. Those songs are reported as unverified rather than as clean, because "no gap found" should only appear when a song was actually checked.

Why weren't all of my songs checked?

The free check works through your most popular songs first and stops at a time limit, so a large catalog may only be partly covered. The result tells you how many songs were checked. A free account lets you review the whole catalog.
