Then one afternoon he stopped and actually looked. Not at one statement, at all of them. The MLC (which pays songwriters for streams in the United States), SoundExchange (which pays for internet and satellite radio), and his PRO (which pays when a song is played on TV, on the radio, or live). Different logins. Different spellings of his own name. Different piles of paperwork, most of it never filled out.
Some songs were registered correctly. Some were not registered at all. A few had claims sitting on them from a company he had never heard of and definitely never hired.
Here is the part that still bothers him. None of that money was in a fight. Nobody was disputing it. It was his, it was sitting there waiting, and the only reason he did not have it was that the paperwork is tedious, invisible, and easy to put off forever. He has Dove Awards on the shelf and a label of his own. If it was happening to him, it is happening to writers with less time and less help.
